The end of a golden age in the world of Bengali music has come down with the sad demise of popular musician Sandhya Mukherjee leaving to the land of no return.

Sandhya Mukherjee breathed her last at a private hospital in Kolkata on Tuesday (February 15) evening. She was 90 years old at the time of her death.

Sandhya Mukherjee was born on 4 October 1931 in Dhakuria, Kolkata. Father Narendranath Mukherjee used to work in the railways. The youngest of six sisters had a distinct passion for music since her childhood.

She learnt song from Pandit Santosh Kumar Basu and Chinmoy Lahiri in childhood. Sandhya Mukherjee was trained in classical music by Ustad Bare Ghulam Ali and even his son Ustad Munabar Ali Khan.

She made her debut as a playback singer in 1948. Apart from classical music, the number of songs sung by Sandhya Mukherjee in the film world is not less. If this path does not end, this is just a day of singing, come to mother Lakshmi Bose's house, champa chameli rose garden, I saw you in a dream. The innumerable songs in her voice will be forever remembered by the listeners.
At one time She also sang in the Hindi film industry. She gave play back in 17 Hindi films. She haf also released her own album. Sandhya Mukherjee returned to Kolkata for marriage in the mid-fifties when her career was in full swing in Mumbai in the fifties. She intended to organize her family from here as well as continue his singing career. She had worked with famous music directors like Sachin Dev Barman, Hemant Mukherjee, Salil Chowdhury, Anil Biswas, Madan Mohan, Roshan etc.

This legendary singer of the golden age was also awarded the Geetashree honor. She received Bangabibhushan.

Even Sandhya Mukherjee got the national honor. In the rules of time, she too was lost from the title. Except for her birthday, the scratches of the pen would not be read on him anymore.

However, on the eve of the Republic Day, the announcement of Padma Samman stirred up again. The Bengali legendary singer rejected the Padma-proposal letter given by the central government. She said in a firm voice, "The way my country loves me, I don't need Padma Shri or any other Sri."
