Afghan girls can study at university, but not in a room with boys, said Abdul Baki Haqqani, the Taliban's Education Minister.
The new Afghan Education Minister made the announcement at a news conference on Sunday (September 12), Qatar-based Al-Jazeera reported.
He said Afghan women can study at the highest levels of university. They have to wear hijab. However, he did not specify whether covering the face was mandatory.
Haqqani said attitudes towards women have changed over the past 20 years. However, we will not allow boys and girls to class together and co-education will not be allowed
Last week, the Taliban formed an interim government with terrorist-listed and hardliner leaders. No woman or member of any other group got a place in that government. Meanwhile, the Taliban released new policies on education. Earlier on Saturday (September 11), the Taliban hoisted their flag at the presidential palace in Afghanistan. The group is thought to have signaled the beginning of its rule in Afghanistan.
Taliban leader Abdul Baki Haqqani said gender segregation would also be enforced. He said students will be taught by female teachers wherever possible.
Thank God we have more female teachers. As a result, we will not face any problems. He also said that all efforts will be made to find female teachers for female students.
Haqqani said the subjects being taught would also be reviewed.
He further said that we will start the work of nation building with what exists in the country. The Afghan Education Minister said he wanted to bring the education of Afghan universities on par with universities in other parts of the world.
