Dhaka: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed his popular defense minister, Yoav Gallant.
In a surprise announcement on Tuesday (November 5), Netanyahu said he had lost confidence in Gallant's handling of Israel's wars in Gaza and Lebanon.
"That confidence has been eroded over the past few months. In light of this, I have decided to end his term as defense minister today," Netanyahu said in a statement issued by his office.
The statement added that Netanyahu had appointed Foreign Minister Israel Katz to replace Gallant as defense minister, with Gideon Saar becoming the new foreign minister.
Shortly after the dismissal was announced, Gallant said in a post on X that working to ensure Israel's security "will always be my life's goal."
