Dhaka: The deep depression created in the Bay of Bengal has crossed the Khulna coast of West Bengal and Bangladesh. As a result, heavy to very heavy rains are falling in Khulna and other coastal areas. Coastal and low-lying areas are at risk of tidal surges two to four feet higher than normal.
Meteorologist Abdur Rahman Khan told Barta24 that due to depression, the seaport has been asked to lower the warning signal number 4 and hoist the warning signal number 3.
The meteorological department's special notification No. 7 said that the depression created by the Bay of Bengal, passing through the West Bengal-Bangladesh border area and crossing the West Bengal-Khulna coast, has moved further northeast and crossed the coast between 12 noon and 6 pm on Friday. The depression was in the form of ground depression in the Faridpur-Madaripur area and adjoining areas at 6 pm on Friday. It may move further northeast and weaken. Air pressure differences are prevailing in the North Bay and adjoining areas and deep moving clouds are forming.
Chittagong, Mongla, Payra seaport and Cox's Bazar coast have been asked to display local warning signal number 3. The Bay of Bengal is rough.
The coastal districts of Satkhira, Bagerhat, Jhalokati, Pirojpur, Barguna, Bhola, Barisal, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Chittagong and the lowlands of their remote islands and chars are two to four feet higher than normal due to depression.
The meteorological department also said that heavy to very heavy downpours are likely in Chittagong, Khulna, Barisal, Dhaka, Sylhet, Mymensingh, Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions due to the depression.
