Despite being ranked 97th last year in the World Peace Index compiled by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), a Sydney-based international research institute in Australia, Bangladesh has risen to 91st this year with a score of 2.068.

The index is based on information on the security and safety of citizens of 163 countries living in peaceful countries, economic values, trends and steps taken to build a peaceful society and publishes it every year. The IEP has developed this index based on three criteria this year - the absence of violence or the fear of violence - security and safety, ongoing conflict and militarization.

The Australian research institute released the Global Peace Index-2021 on Thursday (June 17). Bangladesh ranks third in peace among South Asian countries in the index.

Bhutan, as always, tops the peace index in the region. They are ranked 22nd in the world with 1.51 points. In this case, however, the country has deteriorated by two steps than last year. Nepal has also come down two steps. Nepal is ranked 85th in the world and third in South Asia with 2.033 points.

Bangladesh has overtaken Sri Lanka in the third position. In this index of peace, Bangladesh has overtaken Sri Lanka by one jump compared to last year. The index has also been affected by the deteriorating peaceful situation in Sri Lanka. The country has declined 19 steps compared to last year; This time their global position is 95th in the index. However, Sri Lanka is in the fourth place in South Asia.

Despite two steps of progress, India's position is 135. They got 2.553 points in the peace index. The peaceful situation in South Asia has deteriorated in Pakistan. The country has deteriorated two steps compared to last year. As a result, Pakistan has dropped to 150th position. Pakistan ranks sixth in South Asia.

Like last time, Afghanistan is at the bottom of the list. Their point is 3.631. The position of the most peaceful country remains unchanged. Like last year, Iceland is at the top of the list again. They got 1.1 points.

One step ahead is New Zealand second and two steps ahead is Denmark third. And after going down two steps, Portugal's position is in the fourth place.

The other countries in the top ten are Slovenia, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, the Czech Republic and Canada. Six steps ahead, the United Kingdom is now 33rd and two steps down to 122.

According to the index by the Institute for Economics and Peace, fears of violence in the region are low in Bangladesh and India. Even then, 25 percent of people in Bangladesh and 23 percent in India are very concerned about violent crime. Afghanistan is also one of the most feared countries in the region. Fifty-three percent of the country's population is concerned about violence.

The Sydney-based international research institute says that last year, Bangladesh's score in the Global Peace Index was 2.102, but this year it is 2.608. At the same time, Bangladesh is 1.62 percent more peaceful this year than last year.

The 2021 index shows that global peace has deteriorated by an average of 0.07 percent. The IEP report said global peace had deteriorated for the ninth time in 13 years, albeit in small numbers.

The Middle East and North Africa are the least peaceful regions in this index of global peace. At least three of the five least peaceful countries in the world are located in these two regions.
