Dhaka: Today, December 2, marks the 24th anniversary of the Chattagram Hill Tracts Peace Accord. The agreement was signed between the government and Jana Sanghati Samiti on this day in 1997.

On December 2, 1997, Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma alias Santu Larma, President of the Chattagram Hill Tracts Jana Sanghati Samiti, signed a peace agreement with the then Chief Whip Abul Hasnat Abdullah on behalf of the Bangladesh government.

The signing of the agreement marked the end of the long two-decade struggle of the Shanti Bahini. The members of the armed struggle of the Shanti Bahini returned to normal life. As a result of the peace agreement, the members of the Shanti Bahini initially surrendered their weapons. And the government announced their general amnesty.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have given separate messages on the occasion.

On the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the Chattogram Hill Tracts Peace Accord, Minister for Chattagram Hill Tracts Bir Bahadur Ushaising will lay a wreath at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban Rd. No. 32 in Dhanmondi at 8 am today.

A discussion meeting has also been organized in the conference room of the ministry at 11 am on the occasion of the day.
