President Abdul Hamid addressing the Deputy Commissioners said that we  have to remember that our family lives on people's money. So people have the right to receive services. He said that serving the people is not a matter of kindness or generosity.

The president made the remarks while addressing a video conference from Bangabhaban at the Deputy Commissioners' Conference at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka on Tuesday (January 18).

"You are acting as the coordinator and supervisor of various government activities at the field level, which is playing an important role in the development of the country as a whole," he said.

The President, as a servant of the people, advised to put the interests of the country and the people above all, and said, "We and you are the servants of the people." So do your duty as a servant of the people. Deliver government services to the doorsteps of the people.

He said social security programs are an effective means of alleviating poverty and establishing social justice. Through these programs, DCs need to provide effective leadership in meeting the basic needs of the country's poor, ensuring social security and empowerment of the people, especially women.

The President directed the Divisional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners to build a culture of transparency and accountability at every level of field administration.

President Hamid said corruption is the biggest obstacle to development. Sustainable development is being hampered by corruption. Therefore, a culture of transparency and accountability must be built at every level of field administration.

Noting that responsibilities and powers are vested in every level of bureaucracy and political leadership, the President said that exercise of power is essential for proper and efficient discharge of responsibilities, but it is more important to ensure that power is not misused.

He said the DCs need to provide effective leadership in ensuring that the basic needs of the poor, social security and empowerment of the people, especially women, are met through these programs.

The President said that the Deputy Commissioners should make efforts so that the real poor could enjoy the benefits of this program.

He said the government has given special importance to eco-friendly rural development, which is different from previous years. In villages like cities, all kinds of facilities have to be ensured. In order to ensure civic amenities in Mofussil areas, President DCs should take special initiative to develop Upazila Sadar and growing industrial centers as modern cities and suburbs through housing, education, expansion of agro-based industries, medical services, electricity, gas, drinking water and sewerage system.
