He made the remarks in a virtual speech from Bangabhaban on Tuesday (January 25) evening on the occasion of Police Week 2022.
The President said ordinary people go to the police for legal help when they are in danger. You will listen to their concerns and complaints very carefully and do not hesitate to give them sincere legal assistance.
"You (the police) will stand by the people as 'friends'," he said. Be a humane policeman and do your duty by serving the people and gaining their confidence to become a true force.
Inspired by the spirit of the great war of liberation, the President called upon the police force to work for the welfare of the country and the people with patriotism, honesty and utmost devotion.
Noting that the government is working to make Bangladesh Police a useful force in a modern and developed country, the President said that with the spread of information technology (IT), access to police service has also become easier.
He hopes that new units have already been formed to provide timely police services. This will make the activities of the police more dynamic and the people will easily get better police services. Emphasizing on more involvement of the people in community policing and bit policing, the President said that it was not possible for the police alone to suppress crime from the society.
He said that you have to make sincere efforts to build Bangladesh Police as a 'people friendly police and humane police'. Noting that the present government is working towards making Bangladesh a developed country by 2041, President Hamid said the country has already made great strides in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He further said that the police must move forward to meet the challenge of building a developed and prosperous Bangladesh through research, innovation and adoption of the latest technology.
The President said that Bangladesh Police should be rich in new research and innovation. He opined that it is very important for the Bangladesh Police to have a think tank.
Noting that cyber crime using domestic, regional and international networks and various apps is on the rise among other crimes in today's world of technology development, the President said, we need to enhance the capacity of police to deal with cyber crime and create rich, trained and skilled manpower in modern information technology.
Abdul Hamid said that the police personnel should be equipped with the latest technology to face future challenges.
Mentioning that the campaign against militancy is one of the major achievements of Bangladesh Police, he said, "People need to be involved in preventing militancy and public awareness against it needs to be raised."
Referring to drug abuse as a major social disorder, he said a section of the country's youth was getting involved in drug-related crimes with the help of some dishonest employees of various government departments, including the police.
The President said that the police should be more active in this regard. In this regard, the policy of 'Zero Tolerance' has to be considered.
