Landslides have occurred in Papua New Guinea. Hundreds of people are feared to die.

This information was revealed in a report by Al-Jazeera on Friday (May 24).

According to the report, the incident took place in Kaokalam village in the northern part of the country. More than 50 houses were damaged in this incident. Many buried under the ground.

It is also said that the landslide occurred as the residents were sleeping. As a result, the number of casualties may increase.

Locals say that around 300 people have died. However, authorities are yet to confirm the actual number of casualties.

Meanwhile, after the landslide, medical teams, members of the military, police and staff of various UN agencies have been sent to the accident site.

Janet Philmon, interim secretary-general of the Papua New Guinea Red Cross, told AFP the landslide was in a remote village. It can take up to two days for emergency services or relief to reach there.
