An allegation of rape of a 19-year-old girl (train no. 724) on the Udayan Express train from Sylhet to Chattogram has been made. In this incident, the railway police arrested three employees of SA Corporation, a company that supplies food to trains. At the same time, the train director (guard) Abdur Rahim has been temporarily suspended by the railway authorities.
The incident took place in the running train on Wednesday (June 26) around four in the morning.
Earlier, the train left Sylhet at 10 pm on Tuesday. Reached Chattogram station at 8 am on Wednesday.
According to the police station and railway sources, the incident took place around 4:30 pm on Tuesday after the Udayan Express train left Sylhet at night. The train was passing through Laksham area at the time of the incident. The victim complained that the three workers of the catering service took the girl to the food cart and raped her.
According to Railway Police, a 19-year-old girl was coming to Chattogram by Udayan Express. The girl was first molested by some employees of S A Corporation during her stay in the food compartment. Later, the victim complained that the she was raped in the early morning in that compartment. Although the young woman lives in Bhairab with her relatives, her home is in Bandarban district.
According to the information provided by the railway, in this incident, three workers of the food supply company Jamal (27), Md. Sharif (28) and Md. Rashed (27)were arrested.
Chattogram Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Shahidul Islam confirmed the matter at around eight o'clock in the night.
He said that three persons were arrested on the charge of raping a young woman in the food compartment of Udayan Express. They have been sent to jail by court. A seven-day remand for questioning has been prayed for.
He also said that the victim (girl) is in police custody. She will be sent to One Stop Crisis Center of Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
The incident of rape in a running train is shocking and unwanted, said the General Manager of Eastern Railway Nazmul Islam. He said that apart from the arrest of the accused, a case has already been registered against them as there is a GRP. The train guard was also suspended. Railways have already canceled the catering license of SA Corporation indefinitely.
