Jahangirnagar University (JU) may have a revenue shortfall of around Tk. 12 crore in FY 2024-25. In view of this, the Treasurer of the University expressed his apprehension and said, "If the amount of deficit continues to increase like this, it will become difficult to run the normal activities of the University."
This was said by the Treasurer Prof. Rasheda Akhtar.
In the speech of the Treasurer, she said that in the revised budget of 2023-2024 and the original budget of 2024-2025, including the needs of various departments, halls and offices, the revised budget of Tk. 344 crore 94 lakh and the original (expenditure allocation) demand budget of Tk. 356 crore 97 lakh have been sent to the University Grants Commission. The budget examination team of the University Grants Commission examined and evaluated the University's revised 2023-2024 and original demand budget for 2024-2025. Later, the University Grants Commission allocated Tk. 318 crore 73 lakh of the revised budget and Tk. 318 crore 44 lakh of the original budget.
The Treasurer also said that currently the deficit in the revenue fund of the University is Tk. 65 crore 87 lakh. Even if all efforts to achieve austerity are continued, there may be a revenue deficit of approximately Tk. 12 crore in the current financial year. A balanced budget has been formulated as per the instructions of the University Grants Commission. In most sectors, the budget allocated is much less than the actual needs of the University. Under such financial pressure it is literally impossible for the University to prepare a budget. As the deficit increases, it will become difficult for the University to carry out its normal activities.
Note that Tk. 279 crore 12 lakh has been allocated for the current financial year from the University Grants Commission (UGC). Besides, from the University's own sources, the total income target has been set at Tk. 39 crore 32 lakh. Accordingly, the presented budget of Jahangirnagar University (JU) for the financial year 2024-25 of Tk. 318 crore 44 lakh has been approved.
