Water of Jamuna river has started receding in Jamalpur

The water of various rivers including Jamuna, Brahmaputra has started receding in Jamalpur. Although the water has receded somewhat, the overall flood situation remains unchanged.

In the last 24 hours, the water level of Jamuna has decreased by 4 cm at Bahadurabad ghat point and is flowing 90 cm above the danger level.

Around two and a half lakh people of 45 unions of Islampur, Dewanganj, Maderganj, Melandah and Sarishabari upazilas of the district have already been trapped in water due to the spread of flood water in the vast township. However, the administration said that about 150,000 people from 23,000 families have become marooned.

According to Jamalpur District Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education, 214 primary and secondary schools of the district have been inundated by flood water. There are 30 secondary education institutions closed in Islampur upazila, 25 in Dewanganj, 7 in Maderganj and 1 in Bakshiganj.

151 primary schools have been declared closed in four upazilas of the district except Sadar upazila.

On Saturday (July 6) from the morning to the afternoon, it is learnt that the people of the inaccessible Charland  of the Jamuna River have been the most affected by talking to the people on the ground in various flood-prone areas of Dewanganj and Islampur upazilas. Most of the people in these regions are poor. Many houses have been damaged by the flood of Jamuna. Due to water logging for five days, the income of many daily laborers has stopped.

Abu Saeed, a poor resident of remote Prajapatir char area, said that water started rising in our house from last Tuesday morning. Up on the floor of the house in the evening. The next day there was water and water all around. I work on the next land and run the family. Now all the incomes have been stopped as the land and houses are under water.

There are many poor day laborers like him, all in the same situation.

One named Sharif said, I run my family by working. All income is stopped when the water rises. I spend days without eating with my family, no one comes to inquire.

Meanwhile, flood water has entered the office of Dewanganj Railway Station, Upazila Nirbahi Officer informed.

Dewanganj upazila's Dewanganj-Kholabari road connection road and 30 meters section of Dewanganj-Sanandbari regional road in Katharbil area are still closed due to the onrush of flood water.

Jamalpur water development board water meter (gauge reader) Abdul Mannan said that in the last 24 hours, the water of the Jamuna river has decreased by 4 cm and is flowing above the danger level by 90 cm.

District relief and rehabilitation officer Alamgir Hossain said that now 190 metric tons of rice and 3 thousand 400 packets of dry food have been allocated for distribution in 6 upazilas for the flood-hit people of the district.
