Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has called for the construction of a democratic, discrimination-free, non-communal, transparent and accountable state structure through radical reforms of the state structure to meet the expectations of the students who are the dreamers of 'New Bangladesh'.
The organization believes that the youth will take the lead in keeping the demand for the construction of a well-governed Bangladesh with the guarantee of the common people's voting rights, justice, human rights, freedom of expression and media. Along the way, the interim government should create an environment to achieve state reforms and national political settlement suitable for the realization of this dream.
In a circular sent on Monday (12 August) on the occasion of International Youth Day, TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said, we have witnessed the downfall of the authoritarian government in exchange for unprecedented loss of life and sacrifice through an unprecedented coup led by young students. This coup proves that the irrepressible youth cannot be kept in power by ignoring or oppressing them.
He said, all parties concerned including all political parties should learn from this movement - not to suppress the power of youth, but to build a state system suitable for ensuring the fair human rights of their informed people. Through this auspicious beginning of the new day, through radical changes in the state structure in the light of the true spirit of the liberation war, we believe that the youth will show us the way to build a non-discrimination, non-sectarian, transparent, accountable and well-governed country with guarantees of voting rights, justice, human rights, freedom of expression and media for the common people of this country. .
On the occasion of International Youth Day 2024, the youth generation stakeholders associated with TIB has made several recommendations considering the potential youth population as the key driver of national achievement. These include- to be committed and proactive in building a new Bangladesh that is non-discriminatory, egalitarian and merit-based, democratic, accountable, well-governed, free from discrimination and corruption, based on the aspirations of the youth; Build a state structure that is capable of building a human rights-based, public welfare, participatory and inclusive democratic 'New Bangladesh' with freedom of speech and free media, following the lessons of the defeat of long-cherished corrupt and corrupt politics; The entire institutional structure should be overhauled by stopping the partisanship of state and constitutional institutions, so that these institutions never become tools of the government's power-hungry agenda.
TIB's recommendations also include ensuring exemplary accountability for multi-dimensional and multi-level unprecedented and brutal human rights violations, in this case ensuring exemplary punishment of the guilty by establishing a fully independent commission under the initiative of the United Nations to ensure nationally and internationally acceptable investigations.
Also ensuring institutional and legal frameworks to guarantee fundamental rights such as right to protest, freedom of assembly, freedom of media and freedom of speech; To permanently block the acquisition and expansion of illicit wealth through the use of public office and public representation as a license for corruption; Determine effective strategies to permanently stop the fascist-style shutdown of the internet and social media as one of the mediums of information, speech and expression; In order to prevent human rights violations, taking initiatives on the basis of national consensus to organize all the institutions involved in the rule of law as well as the overall state structure; The TIB has recommended sustainable measures to overcome all forms of intimidation so that the people of enmass can express their views without fear.
