Commenting that there is no scope to draft a constitution by ignoring the anti-discrimination student movement and the mass uprising, the Chairman of the Constitutional Reform Commission, Dr. Ali Riaz, said that the issue of the mass uprising of ‘24 should be kept in the constitution because if there was no mass uprising, this commission would not have existed.
Dr. Ali Riaz said these things in response to a question from journalists at a press conference held at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad on Sunday (November 3) afternoon.
He said that everything that is happening now, including the Constitutional Reform Commission, is the result of the sacrifices of thousands of people, and said, if what the fascists did to retain power and the role played by the general students and the public against it is not mentioned, then what will be written in the constitution? Why we saw so many people sacrifice their lives, it must be written.
He said, whether it is in the constitution or not, there is undoubtedly a 16-year fascist regime behind the July uprising. That must undoubtedly be documented. We as a nation cannot do anything beyond this or by ignoring this history. I think it is not only necessary but also inevitable to record the revolution of the masses of the 24th in history.
He also said, everyone in the Constitutional Reform Committee has been working on the constitution for many years. I can say from my experience that I have been trying to understand the constitution for the last two to two and a half years. So there is no chance to call this commission inexperienced. The commission is not taking or will not take any decision alone. Overall, the commission will take the final decision on constitutional reform.
At the time, he said, the commission will present recommendations for constitutional reform by December 31. However, the head of the Constitutional Reform Commission also said that no final decision has been made on which method will be used.
