Lawyer killed in clash over Chinmoy's release

Chattogram Bureau: A lawyer named Saiful Islam Alif was killed in an attack by protesters demanding the release of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in the Laldighi area of Kotwali police station in Chattogram city. He was hit on the head.

The incident took place in front of the Rangam Convention Hall at the entrance of the court building on Tuesday (November 26) at around 3:30 pm. Alif was taken to Chattogram Medical College (CMC) Hospital in a serious condition, where the doctor declared him dead.

Nivedita Ghosh, the duty doctor of the emergency department of CMC Hospital, confirmed the matter. She said that 7 injured people were brought to the hospital. One of them died. In addition, Srivas Das, Sharku Das, Choton, Sujit Ghosh, Utpal and Enamul Haque are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Earlier, after bail was not granted after the hearing, Chinmoy was taken to a police prison van at 12:20 pm on Tuesday. Then his supporters surrounded the prison van and stopped it. The road leading out of the court premises was blocked with an old pickup van. Even though the police requested and tried to persuade them to move, they blocked the road. The tires of the police prison van were punctured. Then at 2:50 pm, they were dispersed by exploding sound grenades and lathi-charge. Later, Chinmoy Krishna Das was taken to the prison in a police pickup. When the dispersed ISKCON supporters left the court premises, they threw bricks at the chambers on the ground floor of the court mosque market on motorcycles, cars and the court. Several people were injured in the impact of their bricks and stones. A pitha trader named Nasir Uddin from Laldighi square suffered a head injury. Saiful Islam Alif was beaten up at that time. ISKCON supporters were seen carrying ramdaos and sticks.

As of last news, Sanatans have taken up positions at the New Market intersection in the city. On the other hand, a group of youths, chanting slogans of 'Naraye Takbir, Allahu Akbar', have taken up positions at the New Market intersection with a procession.
