Dhaka: Agitated workers have blocked Tejgaon Satrasta Tibet in protest of the arrest of Bangladesh Truck-Covered Van Drivers Union President Talukder Md. Monir.

They started the blockade on Tuesday (December 10) evening.

During this time, they have blocked the road by burning tires and using trucks. This has caused severe traffic congestion.

According to sources from the Tejgaon Traffic Division, workers gathered at various places to protest after the evening. Then they occupied the Tibet and Satrasta intersection. The workers are protesting by taking up positions on the road. Thousands of vehicles are stuck on the road. The traffic police are unable to handle the chaotic situation on the road even by diversion.

Traffic Tejgaon Industrial Zone Assistant Commissioner (AC) Snehashish Das said, Tibet and Sat Rasta intersections in Tejgaon Industrial Zone area have been blockeded. In addition to the main road, traffic on the side streets has also been completely stopped. The Crime Division has already been informed to evacuate the workers. Senior officials are at the scene.

He said that traffic was completely stopped till 7:45 pm at the latest.

Tejgaon Industrial Zone Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Gazi Shamimur Rahman said, Talukder Md. Monir, leader of the Awami League-affiliated workers' organization, has been arrested. He was arrested this afternoon in a murder case filed with Paltan Police Station. In protest, workers mainly following Monir blocked Tejgaon Road with trucks. They are also protesting by burning tires. Senior officers including me are present at the scene. Efforts are being made to normalize the situation.
