The 48th martyrdom anniversary of Lance Naik Birsreshtha Munshi Abdur Rouf who embraced heroic death in the liberation war of 1971 is being observed here today at his native home Salamatpur (now Rouf Nagar) under Madhukhali upazilla of this district.
In this connection an elaborate program has been chalked out jointly by Upazilla administration and family of the Birshreshtha.
The program of the day included hoisting of national flag, Quran Khani, Doa Mahfil and discussion meeting at Munshi Abdur Rouf's house where his only elder sister Jahanara Begum is alive. Mother Mukidunnessa died two years back.
Madhukhali Upazilla Parishad handed over Taka 20 thousand to Jahanara Begum for arranging discussion meeting and Doa Mahfil at Munshi Rouf memorial library and museum built by Faridpur Zilla parishad at an estimated cost Taka 68 lakhs four years ago.
It may be mentioned here that Munshi Rouf laid down his life as a member erstwhile E.P.R(now BGB) while he was posted at Mahalchari in Rangamati district. On April 20, 1971 Munshi Rouf was on duty with a machine gun at Chingri khal of Burighat area to guard against the occupation Pakistan army. While protecting his defense against the enemy forces he was killed by a mortar shell of the enemy.
However his grave was discovered in 1996 where a memorial plaque was built later on. He joined the sector 8 in the liberation war as member of border guard force.
After the independence he was awarded Birsreshtha posthumously by the government of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
