The Cabinet has given policy approval to the draft of the Narcotics Control (Amended) Law, 2020 in the regular meeting of the cabinet held in the Prime Minister's Office on Monday (Feb.10) with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Cabinet Secretary (Coordination and Reform) Shaikh Mujibur Rahman told the press briefing after the meeting that the draft of the Narcotics (Amended) Act was given in the meeting.

He said that the Department of Security services of the home ministry was the initiator of the Act.

The secretary said that judicial proceedings will be conducted in all cases related to control of narcotics under the District Judge. Tribunals are not being set up for these cases due to shortage of judges and administrative complexity. The amendment of this law will help speedy settlement of 175,000 cases related to narcotics.

At the meeting, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman also gave the policy approval for drafting 'Bangladesh Tourism Corporation Act, 2020'.

He said the sponsor of the law is the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. Successful implementation of this law will help develop tourism industry, eliminate unemployment and increase income. According to the law, the chairman of the tourism corporation will be a secretary level officer.
