Spiritual leader Aga Khan breathed his last

World-renowned spiritual leader, philanthropist and business entrepreneur Prince Karim Aga Khan has died at the age of 88.

His charity, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), confirmed his death in a statement on Tuesday (February 4).

Prince Karim Aga Khan was the 49th hereditary imam of the Ismaili sect of Shia Islam. He succeeded his grandfather in 1957 at the age of just 20. He died in Lisbon, Portugal, on Wednesday (February 5) surrounded by family members. He was a prominent philanthropist whose organizations played a significant role in the development of healthcare, education and culture worldwide.

The Aga Khan was born in Switzerland, but acquired British citizenship and lived in a palace in France. His wealth was estimated by Forbes magazine in 2008 at around 1 billion dollars. He also had large investments in various business sectors, including horse breeding. In particular, he was known as one of the most successful horse breeders in Europe. His famous horse Shergar won the Epsom Derby in 1981, but was kidnapped in 1983 and never recovered.
