Torch procession on the campus seeking intervention of government to remove SUST VC
Sylhet: The ongoing student movement of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet has become stronger on the issue of Vice Chancellor’s removal. After 11 days, the university teachers' association has finally issued a statement to the media.
The statement urged the government to take immediate action on the resignation of Vice Chancellor Farid Uddin Ahmed. On Sunday (January 23) in a press statement, the President of the Teachers Association, Professor Dr. Tulshi Kumer Das announced four decisions.
The decisions are
>>> The barbaric police attack on students and teachers is strongly condemned. The government should immediately form an impartial inquiry committee and identify the culprits and take appropriate action.
>>> Students who are on hunger strike need to do whatever it takes to break the hunger strike. We am seeking the cooperation of the government in this regard.
>>> The issue of resignation of the Vice-Chancellor is under the jurisdiction of the government. In this case, it is requested to take immediate action.
>>> Students are urged not to get involved in any kind of violence.
Meanwhile, 104 hours and 30 minutes of the students' hunger strike demanding the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor passed at 11:30 pm on Sunday. Meanwhile, 16 hunger striking students have been admitted to the hospital due to illness. The hunger strikers are slowly moving towards certain death. Yet, leaving the illusion of life, they are continuing their hunger strike by fighting to the death with the aim of realizing their demands. It is learned that 4 more students have joined the hunger strike along with the previous 23 people.
Earlier, the protesters cut off electricity and water supply to the Vice-Chancellor's residence at around 8 pm. The students are not allowing anyone except the police to enter the residence of the Vice -Chancellor.
The students staged a protest on Sunday around 7 pm. Later at 9 pm there was a torch procession. The procession started from the fasting place, went around the Chetna-71 of the university and ended on the open stage. Hundreds of students took part in the torch procession. At the end of the procession, the effigy of the Vice-Chancellor was burnt.
On the night of January 13, several hundred students of Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall started a movement demanding three points including her resignation alleging misconduct against the provost of Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall. The BCL attacked the students of the hall on Saturday evening. Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Sunday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck. Several policemen, including 50 students, were injured. Since then, there has been a demand for the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor. #
