The state has applied to the Chamber Judge to suspend the bail granted to former Police Superintendent Babul Akhter in the murder case of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu. The hearing on this application is likely to be held in the Chamber Judge's Court on Tuesday.

This information was revealed by the Attorney General's Office on Sunday (December 1).

The High Court granted bail to former Police Superintendent (SP) Babul Akhter in the murder case of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu on November 27.

Earlier, on August 14, SP Babul Akhter had applied for bail in the court of Chattogram's Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Jasim Uddin. Later, on August 18, the judge rejected his bail and issued an order.

Mitu was killed at 7:15 am on June 5, 2016 at the GEC intersection in the city. He was going to the GEC intersection to drop his son on a school bus. At that time, three miscreants on motorcycles surrounded Mitu and shot her dead. Babul Akhter filed a case with Panchlaish Police Station in the city. The PBI submitted its final report to the court on May 12 this year. On the same day, Babul Akhter's father-in-law Mosharraf Hossain filed a case with Panchlaish Police Station against Babul Akhter and eight others for the murder of Mitu. Babul has been in jail since May 17 in this case.

Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman has said that a decision on the appeal will be taken after seeing the High Court verdict in the August 21 grenade attack case in its entirety.

He told the media on Sunday (December 1) when asked whether an appeal will be filed against the High Court verdict.

Earlier, a High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain acquitted all the accused including BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who was sentenced to life imprisonment and former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar, who was sentenced to death, in the August 21 grenade attack case. The trial of the trial court was declared illegal and nullified based on the supplementary charge sheet in the case.

Deputy Attorney General Md. Jasim Sarkar said, "We will appeal against the High Court's verdict in the August 21 grenade attack case after receiving the full verdict. In the appeal, we will request that the trial court's verdict in the cases be upheld."

The defendants sentenced to death by the trial court were - Maulana Tajuddin, leader of the militant organization Harkatul Jihad, former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfazzaman Babar, former Director General of NSI Major General (retd.) Rezzakul Haider Chowdhury, Brigadier General (retd.) Abdur Rahim, Sheikh Abdus Salam, BNP leader and former Deputy Minister Abdul Salam Pintu, Abdul Majed Bhat alias Yusuf Bhat, Abdul Malek alias Golam Mostafa alias GM, Maulana Shawkat Osman alias Sheikh Farid, Mohib Ullah alias Mofizur Rahman alias Obi, Maulana Abu Sayeed alias Dr. Zafar, Abul Kalam Azad alias Bulbul, Jahangir Alam, Hafez Maulana Abu Taher, Hossain Ahmed Tamim, Moin Uddin Sheikh alias Mufti Moin Uddin alias Khwaja alias Abu Jandal alias Masum Billah, Rafiqul Islam alias Sabuj alias Khalid Saifullah alias Shamim alias Rashed, Md. The convicts who were sentenced to life imprisonment were Tarique Rahman, the eldest son of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, Haris Chowdhury (deceased), former political secretary to the BNP chairperson, Shahadat Ullah Jewel, Maulana Abdur Rouf alias Abu Omar alias Abu Humaiya alias Pir Saheb, Maulana Sabbir Ahmed alias Abdul Hannan Sabbir, Abid Hasan Sumon alias Abdur Razzak, Hafez Maulana Yahia, Maulana Abu Bakr alias Hafez Selim Howlader, former commissioner of Ward No. 53 of Dhaka Metropolitan City Ariful Islam Arif, Maulana Mohibul Muttakin, Anisul Mursalin alias Mursalin, Mohammad Khalil, Jahangir Alam Badar, former member of parliament Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad, Mufti Shafiqur Rahman, Mufti Abdul Hai and Ratul Ahmed Babu alias Ratul. On August 21, 2004, a grenade attack was carried out at the rally of then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina. In this, 24 people, including party leaders and activists, were killed. Sheikh Hasina and hundreds of activists were injured. Two cases were filed under the Murder and Explosive Substances Acts in connection with the attack.

In 2018, the trial court gave its verdict in both cases. In the verdict, 19 people, including former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar, were sentenced to death. In addition, the court ordered life imprisonment for 19 people, including BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, and various terms of imprisonment and fines for 11 people.

In 2018, it was registered as a death reference case in the High Court to approve the death penalty. On the other hand, the convicted persons in prison filed separate jail appeals and regular appeals in the two cases through the prison authorities.

Benapole (Jashore): The immigration authorities have sent back 83 devotees of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) who were entering India through the Benapole check post in Jashore in the last two days.

On Sunday (December 1) at 10 am, nine devotees and 74 devotees were sent back after the immigration authorities objected to their travel to India. These ISKCON devotees from different districts of the country came to the Benapole immigration to go to India.

The ISKCON devotees who came to Benapole for the journey to India said that they wanted to go to India to perform religious ceremonies. But they could not enter India as the immigration police turned them back.

Imtiaz Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Benapole Immigration Check post, said that the current situation in the country is worrying. Objections were raised against their travel as their journey was considered suspicious. As a result, 83 people have returned in the last two days. If Indian immigration suspects any of them, many of them are being turned back every day, objecting to their travel. However, there is no restriction on the travel of ordinary passport holders, the OC said.

Recently, Chinmoy Krishna Das, spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sanatani Jagran Jote, was arrested. After this, there has been a demand for his release from India. The first tourist ship of the season has arrived via the Cox's Bazar-St. Martin route.

The ship arrived at the St. Martin jetty at around 4 pm on Sunday (December 1).

Earlier, the ship departed for St. Martin from the BIWTA jetty in Nuniarchara, Cox's Bazar town at around 10 am. Initially, 700 tourists were said to be on board, but later the ship authorities said that the ship had gone to the island with 592 tourists.

Joinal Abedin, the supervisor of St. Martin, a beach club run by the Cox's Bazar district administration, confirmed the matter to Barta24.com.

He said that the first tourist ship of the season has arrived in St. Martin with 592 tourists. The Cox's Bazar district administration has taken strict measures for their safety.
