Four killed in three-way collision in Habiganj
Four people, including a one-year-old child, were killed in a three-way collision involving a microbus, pickup and dump truck in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj.
The accident occurred at a place called Bargharia, adjacent to the upazila on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway around 5:30 am on Wednesday (December 11).
The deceased are - Raisa, the 11-month-old daughter of Manik Mia of Rampur village in Bulla union of Madhabpur upazila, Fazilatunnesa (65) of the same village, Riyad Mia of Budhanti village in Bijoynagar upazila and Pavel Mia, a microbus driver from Haripur village in Nasirnagar upazila.
According to local sources, Abu Hanif of Rampur village in Bulla union of the upazila, his mother Safia Khatun, relative Fazilatunnesa, Manik Mia, his wife Ruma Khatun, and their 11-month-old daughter Raisa returned home on a flight on Tuesday night after completing the holy Umrah Hajj in Saudi Arabia. Riad Mia and Pavel Mia went to pick them up from the airport in a microbus at night. On the way back, the microbus collided head-on with a sand-laden dump truck at a nearby place called Bargharia. Just then, another pickup truck came and hit the damaged microbus, causing it to overturn. Fazilatunnesa, Riad Mia, and child Raisa, who were in the microbus, died on the spot. Later, the police rescued the injured and took them to the hospital, but the microbus driver Pavel Mia died.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khatiata Highway Police Station Md. Margub Touhid confirmed the information about the four deaths and said that the police have seized three vehicles damaged in the accident. However, the drivers of the dump truck and pickup truck fled after the accident.
