JU announces complete abolition of dependents quota
In the wake of the ongoing agitation by students to completely abolish dependents quota in the admission test at Jahangirnagar University (JU), the university has announced the abolition of dependents quota.
On Wednesday (January 5), at 12:15 am, the university's Vice-Chancellor Professor Qamrul Ahsan announced the abolition of dependents quota in the presence of protesters in front of the university's Registrar's Building.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Qamrul Ahsan said that the decision to completely abolish dependents quota was taken in an emergency meeting of the university's Central Admission Committee.
He also said that students had been protesting for several days demanding the abolition of dependents quota in the university. In view of their demands, we discussed with the leaders of the officials and employees today. In the discussion, they gave their opinion to abolish pet quota considering the role of guardians of students.
Earlier, on Tuesday (February 5), officials and employees protested in front of the university's registrar's building at 12 noon demanding the reinstatement of the dependents quota. Later, at 2 pm, the agitating students took out a procession from Battala and circled various halls and took a stand in front of the administrative building demanding the complete abolition of the dependents quota. At one point, the vice-chancellor arrived there, spoke to the students and asked for 4 hours to resolve the pet quota issue.
