According to a report by UNICEF, the UN's global child security and rights organization, 40 crore children have been subjected to severe physical and mental punishment in the last 13 years. From 2010 to 2023, these children were subjected to physical and mental abuse at home. Most of them are five years old at most.

According to the report, among these 40 crore children, about 33 crore children have been subjected to physical punishment or beating multiple times, and the rest are psychological punishments. At present, about 60 percent of the world's total population is under five years of age. Currently, around 500 crore children around the world are at risk of being abused at any given time. Among these children are children from many countries, where beating or corporal punishment of children is prohibited.

According to the UNICEF definition, yelling or talking loudly to children constitutes psychological punishment. Spanking children is illegal in many countries around the world.

According to UNICEF, one in four mothers around the world believes that children need to be spanked or physically punished in order to raise them properly. But their idea is not correct at all.

Kathryn Russell, Executive Director of the organization, said in a statement, "If children are subjected to physical or emotional abuse at home, their emotional development is hindered. Misconceptions about self-worth also develop. Careful and affectionate parenting of children not only strengthens the bond between the child and the parent, but also plays an important role in their education and emotional development. After all, the attention and affection of parents creates a sense of security in children.
