Depression is intensifying, warning signal number 1

The Meteorological Department has said that the depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify further, while the country's seaports have been asked to hoist Distant Warning Signal No. 1.

This warning was given in a special notification on Friday (December 1)night signed by Meteorologist Bazlur Rashid.

According to the notification, the depression located in the Southwest Bay of Bengal and nearby Southeast Bay of Bengal area is moving further west-northwest and staying in the same area. It was 1,525 km southwest of Chattogram seaport, 1,460 km southwest of Cox's Bazar seaport, 1,445 km south-southwest of Mongla seaport and 1,425 km south-southwest of Payra seaport at midnight. It may move further west-northwestwards and intensify.

The maximum sustained wind speed is 40 kmph within 44 km of the low pressure center, increasing to 50 kmph in the form of gusty or gale-force winds, the Met office said. The ocean is rough in the area near the depression center.

In such a situation, all fishing boats and trawlers operating in North Bay of Bengal and deep sea have been asked to move cautiously near the coast till further instructions.
