Mahmudur Rahman got bail in the case of attempt to kill Joy

The court has granted bail to Mahmudur Rahman, former acting editor of the Amar Desh newspaper, who was convicted in the case of conspiracy to kidnap and attempt to kill Sajib Wazed Joy, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her former IT advisor.

On Thursday (October 3), Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge As Sams Jaglul Hossain's court granted his bail.

Earlier, Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubul Haque's court ordered him to be sent to jail when he surrendered to the court on September 29.

In the case of kidnapping and attempted murder of Sajib Wazed Joy on August 17 last year, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Asaduzzaman Noor's court sentenced five people, including Mahmudur Rahman and journalist Shafiq Rehman, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.

The other three convicts who were convicted are Jasas leader Mohammad Ullah, Rizvi Ahmed Caesar and Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan.

The court sentenced the accused to five years' imprisonment and a fine of Tk. 5000 under section 365 (kidnapping) of the Penal Code. If they do not pay the fine, they will have to serve one more month in jail. Besides, in the same Act, under Section 120-B (Criminal Conspiracy), the court sentenced him to two years' imprisonment and a fine of Tk. 5000 - one more month. The judge mentioned in the judgment that the two sentences will run simultaneously.

It is said in the case complaint that from any time before September 2011 till now BNP's cultural organization Jasas vice president Mohammad Ullah Mamun along with high-level leaders of BNP and BNP-led alliance of other parties have gathered in Jasas office in Paltan of the capital, New York City of America, the accused from different areas of United Kingdom and Bangladesh. With the connivance of Prime Minister's son and his ICT adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy was kidnapped and conspired to be killed in America.

In that incident, DB Police Inspector Fazlur Rahman filed the case at Paltan Model Police Station as the plaintiff on August 3, 2015.
