The Myanmar Navy fired at a Bangladeshi fishing trawler in the Bangladesh part of the Bay of Bengal between St. Martin Island and Myanmar. One fisherman was killed and two others were shot. Meanwhile, they arrested 50-60 fishermen including 6 trawlers.
The incident took place at around 2:30 pm on Wednesday (October 9).
On Thursday (October 10) around 12 noon, Myanmar Navy handed over 11 fishermen including 1 trawler to Bangladesh Coast Guard. Under the supervision of the Coast Guard, the Coast Guard landed at Shahparirdwip Jetty around 2.30 pm with 1 boat and 11 fishermen along with the body of the deceased.
The name of the deceased is Osman Gani. He is the son of Bacha Mia, a resident of Konapara, Shahpari Dwip, Teknaf.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Adnan Chowdhury confirmed these matters.
He said, according to local sources yesterday afternoon at around 2:30 PM, the Myanmar Navy shot at a Bangladeshi fishing boat in the Bangladesh part of the Bay of Bengal between St. Martin Island and Myanmar and detained 50 to 60 fishermen including 6 boats. One person was killed and two others were injured in the shooting incident.
The fishermen's family members came to know about the incident and informed me this morning. Later today at 12 noon, the Myanmar Navy handed over the fishermen along with 1 boat to the Bangladesh Coast Guard. Currently under the supervision of the Coast Guard, 1 boat and 11 fishermen along with the body of the deceased landed at Shahparirdwip Jetty a while ago.
UNO said, according to the latest information, the Myanmar authorities have not released the fishermen along with the other 5 boats. Higher authorities have been informed about this.
