An ordinance has been issued setting the age limit for entry into government service at 32 years.

The ordinance was issued by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Ministry of Law on Monday (November 18) night.

The ordinance states that it is expedient and necessary to fix the maximum age limit for direct recruitment in government, autonomous, semi-autonomous, statutory government authorities, public non-financial corporations and self-governing organizations. Whereas Parliament is in a state of dissolution and it has appeared to the President to his satisfaction that the necessary situation exists for taking immediate action. Therefore, the President, by virtue of the powers conferred by Article 93(1) of the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, has formulated and issued the following ordinance.

This Ordinance may be called the Maximum Age Limit for Direct Appointment to Government, Autonomous, Semi-Autonomous, Statutory Government Authorities, Public Non-Financial Corporations and Self-Governing Bodies Ordinance, 2024. It shall come into force immediately.

The Ordinance further states that notwithstanding anything contained in any other law, rule, regulation, order, direction or legal instrument for the time being in force, the provisions of this Ordinance shall prevail. The maximum age limit for entry into service of all cadres of Bangladesh Civil Service shall be 32 years. The maximum age limit for entry into all government services outside the scope of Bangladesh Civil Service shall be 32 years.

In all the posts of autonomous, semi-autonomous, statutory government authorities, public non-financial corporations and self-governing organizations where the maximum age limit for direct recruitment is 30 years or less than 32 years, that age limit will be replaced with 32 years.

In addition, the existing respective recruitment rules or regulations, as the case may be, will remain in force for recruitment to the services of the defense departments and law enforcement agencies.

It is further mentioned that if any ambiguity or difficulty arises in the implementation of this ordinance, the government may, by ordinance in the official gazette, remove the ambiguity or difficulty, subject to consistency with the provisions of this ordinance.
