Dhaka: BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has commented that textual reforms are largely ineffective without qualitative advancement of democratic politics.

He said this while speaking as the chief guest at the annual general meeting of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at the National Press Club premises on Monday (November 25) afternoon.

He said, all of us, whether in the government or outside the government, need to remember that textual reforms are largely ineffective without qualitative advancement of democratic politics. If we want to make reforms effective, we need to first alleviate the daily misery of the people. If the people's daily necessities cannot be ensured, the desired benefits of the reform activities will not be achieved.

Tarique Rahman said, BNP has no dispute with the interim government regarding the reform activities. Those who are involved in creating confusion in the public mind by raising such questions before the reform or before the election have different intentions. BNP believes that the reform process is not a matter of ending, if one person starts it, another one takes forward the necessary reforms because reform is an ongoing process.

The acting chairman of BNP said, just as the mass uprising did not happen for one election, it is a reality, and another cruel reality was to establish a fascist regime by repeatedly forming governments without elections, leaving the people politically powerless. Therefore, elections are definitely a key issue in establishing democratic rights.

Mentioning that it is our responsibility to take steps so that the fugitive dictators and their allies cannot be politically rehabilitated, he said, for this, on the one hand, they must be thrown in front of the people through the courts and on the other hand, politically. To make them irrelevant, the people need political power. Once the right to vote is restored, the people will be able to exercise their rights and make the genocidal, murderer, looting dictators and them irrelevant. This is why the BNP believes that a free and fair election is definitely necessary.

Various conspiracies have already started to hinder the establishment of our democracy. The evil forces have started trying to create misunderstandings between the pro-Bangladesh forces from inside and outside the country. However, he added that it will not be possible if they are united.

He said that the current generation has shown that Awami League and democracy do not go together, Awami League and democracy are enemies.

At the time, BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, General Secretary of Dhaka Union of Journalists Khurshid Alam, Poet Abdul Hai Sikder, Former President of Dhaka Union of Journalists Kamal Uddin Sabuj, Senior Journalist MA Aziz, President of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Quader Gani Chowdhury, Former President of BFUJ M Abdullah, Ameer of Dhaka South Jamaat-e-Islam Nurul Islam Bulbul, among others, also spoke.
