No restriction to the movement of battery-powered rickshaws in Dhaka city

On Monday (November 25), Appellate Division Chamber Judge Md. Rezaul Haque gave order for movement of battery run rickshaw in Dhaka city putting stay on the order of the High Court which slapped stoppage of the battery powered rickshaw.

As a result, there is no obstacle to the movement of battery-powered rickshaws. Earlier, the state filed an appeal against the High Court order. Deputy Attorney General Noor Muhammad Azmi confirmed this information.

Earlier, Greater Dhaka City Corporation Pedal-powered Rickshaw Owners Oikya Jote President Zahurul Islam Masum and Secretary Md. Momin Ali filed a writ in the High Court. The writ sought a ban on the movement of battery-powered rickshaws in the Dhaka metropolitan area.

After hearing the writ, the High Court ordered the movement of battery-powered rickshaws to be stopped in the Dhaka metropolitan area within three days on November 19. At the same time, the court issued a rule asking why the inaction of the defendants in stopping battery-powered rickshaws should not be declared illegal.

The Home Ministry Secretary, Local Government Ministry Secretary, IGP, Dhaka Police Commissioner, Dhaka's two city corporation authorities and other concerned parties were asked to implement the court's order.

A High Court bench comprising Justice Fatema Najeeb and Justice Mahmudur Razi passed the order. Barrister HM Sanjid Siddiqui and Barrister Tahsina Tasnim Mridu filed and made hearing of the writ petition in the court.
