BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the government is desperate to make the country BNP-free to retain state power.

Fakhrul made the remarks in a statement signed by BNP joint office secretary Md Taiful Islam Tipu on Saturday (December 26) evening.

The statement said Habiza Begum, president of Gopalpur Pourashava Jatiyotabadi Mahilla Dal and former councilor of reserved women's seats in wards 4, 5 and 6, was seriously injured by Awami terrorists a few days ago by motor bike over running. She died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday night.

In it, the BNP secretary general said, the misrule of the present government seems to have become more terrible after the mid-night general elections on December 30. This government has now taken to the field in a reckless role to make the country BNP-free with the aim of retaining state power. With this objective in mind, the government party terrorists have been lured to intimidate the leaders and supporters including the BNP candidates in the local government elections.

The statement added that the present ruling party, which does not believe in democracy and the rule of law, has now turned into a barbaric party. As a result, the leaders and activists of the opposition parties including the BNP and the protesting people are spreading their hands in blood so that no one dares to protest against the government. Habiza Begum, president of the Gopalpur Gopalpur Poura Mahila Dal, who was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash and later tragically succumbed to her injuries, on Friday night, proved once again that the present illegitimate government does not want an opposition party in the country.

Expressing deep grief over the death of Habiza Begum, Fakhrul said, "I demand immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in the murder of Habiza Begum."
