Khaleda Zia’s bail period extended for more six months

The law ministry has recommended extending the release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for another six months by suspending her sentence for corruption.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque made the announcement on Saturday (September 11) night.

Law Minister Anisul Haque said he had approved the extension of Khaleda Zia's release. That file has been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

We have suggested that her (Khaleda Zia) sentence be suspended for another six months.

She will not be allowed to go abroad and will have to undergo treatment at home - the law ministry said in a statement.

The former prime minister, who was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case, was released on parole on March 25 last year. Then on September 15 last year, her bail was extended for another six months, subject to her conditions. The bail was last extended for another six months on March 25.

Khaleda has been living in a house named 'Firoza' in Gulshan since her release. She did not take part in any political program after her release. Apart from family members, she did not meet party leaders and workers.

Khaleda Zia had been lodged in the old central jail on Nazim Uddin Road since February 8, 2018. In the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case, the court sentenced the BNP chairperson to 5 years in prison and then extended it for 10 years in prison.
