Forty four people have died so far in the fire in the building of Kacchi Bhai restaurant on Bailey Road in the capital. Several others who were burnt are undergoing treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute.

The fire was reported at 9:50 pm on Thursday (February 29). After about two hours of efforts, the fire was brought under control around 12 midnight.

According to a statement of the fire service, they rescued 75 people alive. The multi-storey building on Bailey Road mainly housed restaurants as well as several clothing and mobile phone shops, the fire service said.

The fire service's media cell informed them that they received information about the fire at 9:50 pm. The first unit arrived at the scene at 9:56 a.m. Later, 12 more units rushed to the spot as the fire spread. Police, Ansar, RAB and NSI worked to control the fire.
