The state had filed an application seeking a stay on the High Court’s verdict declaring ‘Joy Bangla’ as the national slogan. Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik R. Haque gave this information on December 2.

The High Court gave the verdict on March 10, 2020, after the final hearing of a writ seeking the declaration of ‘Joy Bangla’ as the national slogan. The verdict declared 'Joy Bangla' to be the national slogan of Bangladesh and also called for steps to be taken to chant the slogan on national days, government functions and educational institutions. Later, on February 20, 2022, Sheikh Hasina's cabinet approved the decision to recognize 'Joy Bangla' as the national slogan.

The writ was filed by a Supreme Court lawyer in 2017.
