Great Victory Day Today
Today is December 16, Victory Day. An unforgettable day of the Bengali nation's thousand years of bravery and heroism. This day is the day of its emergence as a nation of heroes. The day to announce the existence of an independent land called Bangladesh on the world map.
On this day in 1971, after a long 9-month bloody liberation war, the Bengali nation achieved the final victory of the independence struggle. On this day, the whole country will be filled with the joy of victory, the whole nation will be overflowing with joy. The great Victory Day will be celebrated in various ways in every corner of the country.
The Victory Day celebration will begin with 31 gun salutes, commemorating the surrender of the Pakistani army and the moment when Bangladesh became an independent state on the world map. On the occasion of Victory Day, President Md. Shahabuddin and then Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus will first lay wreaths at the Martyr's Memorial of the National Memorial in Savar in the morning.
Then, the memorial will be opened for wreath-laying to pay tribute to the martyrs of various political parties, socio-cultural and professional organizations and educational institutions.
The national flag will be hoisted across the country, including government, semi-government, autonomous and private institutions. Important buildings and establishments will be decorated with lights.
The great Victory Day program will be celebrated through discussion meetings and Milad and Doa Mahfil. Today is a government holiday.
On the occasion of the day, leaders of various socio-cultural organizations and political parties, including BNP, have given separate messages. They will pay deep respect to the martyrs of the Liberation War and pray for the forgiveness of the souls of the deceased.
On the eve of Victory Day, the President and the Chief Adviser greeted the countrymen in separate messages and paid deep tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War.
In his message, the President said, 'A culture of tolerance and mutual respect must be developed among political parties. So, let us, inspired by the spirit of the 2024 anti-discrimination movement, contribute more from our respective positions to build a discrimination-free country and to implement the goals of the Liberation War and establish an exploitation-free society. Let us take the country and the nation further on the path of development and prosperity, and build a developed and prosperous new Bangladesh - this is my expectation on the great Victory Day.'
The President said, 'I believe that the dream of the people of this country of building a discrimination-free and corruption-free Bangladesh through the mass uprising of students and the public in July-August this year will be realized soon. Bangladesh, the country of heroes, will establish itself in the world with its own glory - InshaAllah.'
He said, 'On this day of victory, I remember with deep respect the brave martyrs who sacrificed themselves in the Liberation War, whose supreme sacrifice earned our independence. I gratefully remember all the national leaders, brave freedom fighters, two hundred thousand mothers and sisters who lost their honor, organizers and supporters of the liberation war, foreign friends, war wounded and martyred family members, and people from all walks of life, who have directly and indirectly contributed to our victory. I also remember those who were martyred in various democratic movements, including the anti-discrimination movement. The nation remembers their contribution with respect.’
The Chief Adviser said in his message, ‘On this day, we respectfully remember the brave martyrs of our freedom struggle and pay tribute to their sacrifice. The interim government formed through the mass uprising of students, workers and the people is pledging to work together to build a developed, prosperous and well-governed Bangladesh.’
In this message given on the eve of Victory Day, he said, we are determined to further develop and strengthen the country and enjoy the full benefits of independence. The Chief Adviser said, ‘Victory Day is not only a source of our pride, it is also our oath day. The oath is to remain united, protect the sovereignty of the country and retain the spirit of the Liberation War.’
Describing Victory Day as a very glorious and memorable day in the history of Bangladesh, Dr. Yunus said, through the victory in the great Liberation War on December 16, 1971, we achieved the taste of independence and our own identity as a nation. The Chief Advisor mentioned, ‘We got our desired independence in exchange for the blood and sacrifice of millions of martyrs.’ The Chief Adviser wished for the all-round success of ‘Victory Day 2024’.
On the occasion of the great Victory Day-2024, the Bangladesh Navy has given honorary commissions to 32 junior commissioned officers. A press release from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that junior commissioned officers of the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO) will be promoted to the rank of honorary sub-lieutenant.
