'The traffic situation in the capital Dhaka is fragile, people are suffering, I am also suffering seeing this. I will tell the protesters not to come out on the streets with any demands. This will cause suffering to the common people. If you want to protest, do it on the footpath.'

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali told reporters after visiting the book- fair premises organized by Bangla Academy on Friday (January 31).

The DMP Commissioner said, 'I have the police department in charge, I am also in charge of the traffic department. I know what the traffic situation is in this city. It is very terrible. During this, there have been protests for several days in a row. Everyone takes to the streets for the protest. This creates severe traffic jams. These people are suffering. I am also suffering seeing this. I will tell you that if you protest, go to the footpath. Don't create suffering for people by coming out on the streets.

He also said, I see people stuck on the streets for hours. 20 people took to the streets and protested. At that time, there may be a terminally ill patient on the street, the elderly cannot move. It has been two and a half months since I took charge. During this time, I have seen that whenever something happens, they block the streets and protest. I have requested many times not to come to the streets with small demands. You form human chains on the sidewalks. But it is very sad, you have found the best place to achieve any demand by blocking the streets. I would request you not to block the streets and put people in misery in this densely populated city.

Stating that there is no fear about the book fair, the DMP Commissioner said, "There will be a 24-hour security system at the fair. The entire area will be monitored through CCTV cameras. Along with the police, intelligence agencies including RAB, CTTC will be engaged in security. Dog squads will also work."

Sajjat Ali also said that there will be surveillance to ensure that no provocative books are published.

Stating that the DMP has set up a breastfeeding zone and safe water facilities, he said, "For the first time, the traffic system on the road from TSC to Doel Chattar will not be completely closed. Heavy vehicles will not ply in the university and fair areas during the fair." The DMP Commissioner also said that there will be supervision to ensure that exorbitant prices are not charged in the food court like at trade fairs.
