Titumir College students have been blocking the 'Mohakali-Gulshan' road for several days to press for their 7-point demands, including state recognition of the government-run Titumir College. As a result, traffic has stopped. The common people traveling on this route are facing extreme suffering.
The Ministry of Education has issued a statement regarding the ongoing movement of the students demanding this. However, rejecting the ministry's statement, the students have announced to continue the hunger strike program.
Ali Ahmed, a student of Titumir College, made this announcement on Saturday (February 1) evening. He said that the movement will be relaxed from 6 am to 11 am for the Biswa Ijtema.
For the past few days, Titumir College students have been on the road demanding an independent university. Due to their road blockade, common passengers have been suffering a lot for several days.
The statement issued by the Ministry of Education on Saturday said that work is underway to form a university with seven colleges in Dhaka and the issue of Titumir College is also being considered. The protesters were requested to be patient and to refrain from any programs that cause hardship in public life or disrupt the normal educational activities of the general students of the college.
Stating that the expert committee is working, the statement said that the Ministry of Education and the government are aware of the ongoing movement demanding the conversion of the Government Titumir College into a university. The Ministry of Education is informing that an expert committee formed under the leadership of the Chairman of the UGC is working to form a separate university by combining the seven traditional colleges of Dhaka. In this regard, the issue of the Government Titumir College is being considered specifically.
The statement said that this committee has already started discussing their problems with the student representatives of seven colleges including Titumir College. The main goal of the government is currently to improve the educational facilities and quality of these colleges. In this regard, the government will consider all the options that can be done. In this situation, it is not reasonable to hold a movement with a time limit to achieve the announcement of the conversion of Titumir College into a university.
Earlier, two students fell ill while observing the sit-in program since Friday morning. Later, they were sent to the hospital. The students offered Jumma prayers at the place where they were protesting and after the prayers, returned with a procession headed towards Mohakhali and blocked the road in front of the college. Later, at around 11:30 pm, the students took up position at Gulshan No. 1 roundabout and held a sit-in program for about an hour at around 12:30 pm.
The students have been observing this hunger strike to death since 5 pm on January 29 with a 7-point demand for state recognition of Titumir University.
Earlier, on Thursday (January 30), the students blocked the road and stopped traffic from noon. Eyewitnesses said that around 250 students of the college took to the streets in the afternoon and started shouting slogans for various demands, including the status of the university.
Later, the protesting students made a point of demanding that the government delegation issue a notification to convert Titumir College into a university. The students had announced that they would protest and go on a hunger strike in front of Titumir College all night if their demands were not met.
At the same time, students of Titumir College announced an indefinite program from the morning of this Friday (January 31) from the Mohakhali Railway, Amtoli and Gulshan Barasat Barricade to Mohakhali.
7-point demand:
1. Publish the university academic calendar by giving state recognition to Titumir University.
2. Form the Titumir University administration and conduct admission activities for the 24-25th session.
3. Immediately ensure 100% accommodation for students or immediately bear the accommodation expenses of 100% of students.
4. Add at least two international standard subjects, Law and Journalism, from the 24-25th session academic year.
5. Hire qualified PhD teachers to conduct academic activities.
6. Limit the number of seats to improve the quality of education.
7. Ensure land and financial allocation for the construction of an international education laboratory.
Incidentally, earlier, in the face of the students' movement of 7 government colleges, the university's Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan announced the cancellation of the affiliation of 7 colleges, including Titumir College, with Dhaka University (DU) from the 2024-25 academic year. He made this announcement after an emergency meeting with the principals of the affiliated colleges on January 27 (Monday).
