‘Illegal money hunter have no place in police’- Dr. Benazir
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Benazir Ahmed has warned his force that those who want to be rich people by earning illegal money they have no place in the police force.
He said police members could not be involved in any kind of corruption in any way. The police must be free from corruption.
The IGP said this in a video conference from the police headquarters on Tuesday(June 16) afternoon with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Dhaka and Mymensingh Range and Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Range DIG and Superintendent of Police
He said he would like to take the police service to the doorsteps of the people through bit policing. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly with the aim of making Bangladesh a developed country by 2041 through the implementation of Vision 2021 and 2041. By joining this development process, Bangladesh Police also needs to be a useful police force like the developed countries.
Addressing the senior officials, the IGP said policing should be brought to the doorsteps of the masses. Development-oriented innovative policing activities should be undertaken from the grass roots to the center through bit policing. Union and ward-centric bit policing activities will be conducted. The officer in charge(OC) will personally look after the happiness and sorrow of every citizen of his designated area. Stand by people in danger and in need. Work is underway to formulate an SOP in this regard. An SOP with specific directions will be delivered to all units soon.
Benazir Ahmed said that the people of the country should be loved unconditionally; people should not be tortured and oppressed in any way. We have to work for the people by all means.
He said legal capacity not physical strength should be used while performing his duties.
Referring to the issue of drugs, the IGP said, our position against drugs is 'Zero Tolerance'. Strict action will be taken against any police member who is involved in drugs or drug trade.
Let us declare war on drugs and take the country to such a position so that the Prime Minister can declare Bangladesh as a drug free country, he said.
Addressing senior officials regarding the welfare of police personnel, the IGP said that maximum welfare of police personnel should be ensured. There are welfare facilities for injured, seriously injured and killed while on duty. In addition to this, the maximum welfare of the members should be ensured while they are working.
We have to move forward by combining governance and affection, he said. Recognition and encouragement for good deeds as well as authority will not be stingy in taking action for bad deeds.
There would be no leniency on the part of police personnel in violating discipline, Benazir Ahmed said that she would have to bear the responsibility for the personal crimes of the police personnel.
The IGP further said that the way in which the Bangladesh Police has stood by the people during the corona crisis cooperating with them and risking their lives to serve the people is really commendable. This humanity of Bangladesh Police has taken Bangladesh Police to a unique height. People have started thinking anew about the police; they love and respect the police. The police have taken place in the inert place of people's minds. We have to keep the dignity of this unprecedented love and respect of the people.
Post corona period will be our biggest challenge next time, he said. In order to face this challenge, we have to work unitedly as the people's police for the people. It will not be easy to become people’s police if they cannot crack down on any kind of police misconduct including corruption and drugs.
Benazir Ahmed said, Bangladesh Police will be one of the partners in building a prosperous Bangladesh in 2041 if we continue to work in harmony to realize the Bangabandhu's dream and all the efforts of the Prime Minister.
