Temporarily suspended Assistant Commissioner Tapasi Tabassum Urmi has been granted bail after surrendering to the court in a defamation case.

On Thursday (November 28), around 10:30 am, she surrendered to the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Imran Ahmed through her lawyer applied for bail.

Then, at around 11:23 am, the hearing on bail began. Urmi's lawyers held a hearing seeking bail. The plaintiff's lawyer Khademul Islam opposed the bail. After hearing both sides, the court granted bail on a bond of Tk. 5,000.

Earlier, on October 8, Abu Hanif, a higher council member and media coordinator of the Gana Odhikar Parishad, filed a defamation case against her in the Dhaka court for making negative comments about Shaheed Abu Sayeed and other martyrs. On that day, the court recorded the plaintiff's statement and issued a summons to her to appear in court on November 28.

The case alleges that on October 5, the accused, despite holding a responsible position in the government, not only wrote derogatory statements against Shaheed Abu Sayeed, but also against the government established through the student-mass movement and the head of the government, Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, on Facebook. Through which, a head of the government formed in accordance with the constitution based on the reference of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has been discredited and fear has been created in the public mind by threatening to overthrow the government.
