Legendary actor Prabir Mitra, known as the legend of Dhaka cinema and the Nawab of the silver screen, has passed away.

He died at around 10:15 pm on Sunday (January 5) while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital. Prabir Mitra was 81 years old.

Actor Misha Saudagar confirmed the matter. In a post on social media, Misha Saudagar wrote, 'Prabhir Mitra Dada is no more. He passed away a while ago. May God forgive him.'

Earlier, his son Mithun Mitra had said that the actor's condition was critical. He said that his father was admitted to the hospital on December 22 due to some complications related to old age. After tests, he was diagnosed with lung problems. Later, he was taken to the ICU.

The veteran actor was born on August 18, 1943 in Chandina, Cumilla. His full name is Prabir Kumar Mitra. Prabir Mitra, who grew up in Old Dhaka, got involved in theatre since his school days. During his school days, he acted in Rabindranath Tagore's play 'Dakghar'.

Incidentally, Prabir Mitra entered the film industry in 1969 with late H Akbar's 'Jolchhobi'. In 1982, he won the National Film Award in the Best Supporting Actor category for the film Boro Bhal Lok Hili. In 2018, he was awarded the National Film Award in the Lifetime Achievement category.

He has acted in over four hundred films including 'Titas Ekti Nodir Nam', 'Jivin Trishna', 'Seyana', 'Jaliat', 'Faryad', 'Rakto Shapath', 'Charitrahin', 'Joy Parajay', 'Angar', 'Mintu Amar Naam', 'Fakir Majnu Shah', 'Madhumita', 'Ashanto Dheu', 'Alonkar', 'Anurag', 'Pratigga', 'Tarulata', 'Gayer Chele', 'Putrabodhu'.

Prabir Mitra won the National Film Award for the first time in 1983 for his performance in the film 'Baro Bhalo Lok Chilo'.

Dhaka: Helal Hafiz, the poet of love and revolution (Innalillahi wainnailahi rajiun), has passed away. He was 76 years old at the time of his death.

He breathed his last on Friday (December 13) at a hostel in Shahbagh called Super Home. Helal Hafiz had been suffering from glaucoma for a long time. He was also suffering from kidney complications, diabetes and nerve complications.

Filmmaker Shabnam Ferdousi confirmed Helal Hafiz's death to Barta24.com.

Shabnam Ferdousi said that poet Helal Hafiz was found unconscious in the hostel where he stayed in Shahbagh. Later, when he was brought to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, the doctors declared him dead.

Helal Hafiz was born on October 7, 1948 in Netrokona.

In 1967, he passed his higher secondary from Netrokona College and was admitted to the Bangla department of Dhaka University. The turbulent sixties became the material for his poetry.

The poem ‘Nishiddha Sampadokio’, written during the mass uprising in 1969, brought him poetic fame. His poem became the slogan of the procession.

‘Now is the best time for those who are young to march/Now is the best time for those who are young to go to war’ These two lines of the timeless poem are inextricably linked to the independence movement of Bangladesh. Later, during the anti-dictatorship movement of the nineties, the poem also aroused a great response among the people.

The first book of poems ‘Je Jalye Agun Jalye’ published in 1986 took the poet to the peak of popularity. After that, more than 33 editions of the book have been published. Helal Hafiz kept himself in hiding for a long time.

After two and a half decades, in 2012, he brought his second book ‘Kavita 71’ to the readers. The third and last book ‘Bednake Bolechi Kedona’ was published in 2019.

Helal Hafiz, one of the country's most renowned poets, received the Bangla Academy Award for Literature in 2013. Before that, he received various honors including the Khalekdad Chowdhury Award.

Advertisement filmmaker Tarek Mahmud Shumon has directed a thought-provoking CSR ad film as part of Domex and Bhumijo's collaborative campaign, launched on World Toilet Day. Titled "Public-er Toilet Hok Bondho", the campaign addresses the rampant issue of public urination on roads, which has long plagued urban areas in Bangladesh.

The campaign, conceived by marketing agency FCB Bitopi, is brought to life by Tarek’s production company, Centreback Productions. Reflecting on his experience, Tarek Mahmud Shumon shared, “From scouting locations to shooting, everywhere I looked, the problem was undeniable—public urination is killing the aesthetics and hygiene of our urban spaces.”

Tarek humorously recounted an incident during the shoot that underscored the campaign's relevance. A graffiti set had been constructed to depict public urination as part of the storyline. However, during filming, an outsider mistook the set for a real spot and began urinating there, completely oblivious to the ongoing shoot. “It was absurd but symbolic of how normalized this behavior has become in our city,” Tarek remarked.

The ad film features striking visuals and an impactful narrative that highlights the consequences of such behavior and advocates for the use of clean, accessible public toilets. The slogan, "Public-er Toilet Hok Bondho", serves as a call to action for citizens to take responsibility for improving urban hygiene.

Tarek Mahmud Shumon, a Dhaka-based filmmaker known for his creative and socially impactful projects, emphasized the importance of storytelling in addressing critical issues. “This project was not just a campaign but an eye-opener for me as a filmmaker. It’s about creating change, one story at a time,” he said.

The campaign has already started making waves on digital platforms, sparking conversations about public hygiene and the collective role citizens play in shaping cleaner cities. Under Tarek’s direction and with the creative vision of FCB Bitopi, the Domex x Bhumijo initiative marks a significant step toward transforming public behavior and fostering urban responsibility.

For Tarek Mahmud Shumon, the campaign is another testament to his commitment to blending creativity with purpose, using film as a medium to drive meaningful change in society.
