West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has demanded that UN peacekeepers be sent to Bangladesh. In this regard, Indian Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor said, I am not sure whether she (Mamata) fully understands the role of UN peacekeepers.

Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor made this comment in a statement given to Indian news agency PTI on Tuesday (December 3).

He said that UN peacekeepers are sent to a country in very few cases, it happens when the government of a country itself requests it.

He also said, I am not sure whether she (Mamata) fully understands the role of UN peacekeepers. I have worked in UN peacekeeping for many years. I can say that UN peacekeepers are sent to that country in very few cases without the request of a country.

He also said that peacekeepers are sent only when a country is completely collapsed. That too, the government of that country must be requested. However, I completely agree that what is happening there (Bangladesh) must be kept under review.

On the arrest of Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatanijagaran Mancha leader Chinmoy Krishna Das, Shashi Tharoor said on Friday that it would not be right for India to talk much about this issue, as the matter is not related to India.

The Indian Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs has called a meeting on December 11 on the current situation in Bangladesh. The current head of this committee is Shashi Tharoor.

Newly elected US President Donald Trump has nominated Lebanese-American businessman Balos Massad as his Middle East and Arab affairs adviser. Massad's son Michael is the husband of Trump's daughter Stephanie.

Trump made the announcement in a post on his very fabled social media account Truth on Sunday (December 2), Al Jazeera reports.

Trump wrote, "I am proud to appoint Massad Balos as the President's Senior Adviser on Arab and Middle East Affairs."

Just a day earlier, Trump appointed Charles Kushner, the father-in-law of another of his daughters, as the next US ambassador to France. Charles Kushner is the father-in-law of Trump's daughter Ivanka.

Masad Bolos was active in Trump's election campaign. He played a special role in winning the hearts of Arab American Muslim voters in particular.

Both Massad's father and grandfather were involved in Lebanese politics. His father-in-law is a funder of the Lebanese political party Free Patriotic Movement, a Christian group affiliated with Hezbollah.

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvil has announced that she will not resign even though her term has expired. She has declared the elected parliament invalid, alleging fraud in the October 26 election.

She said the "illegal" election should be annulled and new elections should be held. The illegitimate parliament has no right to elect her successor when its term ends in December and therefore she will remain in office.

The US State Department said on Saturday that the United States has suspended its strategic partnership with Georgia after the Dream Party decided to suspend its EU membership bid.

“We condemn the excessive use of force against the Georgian people. They are protesting this betrayal of their constitution,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller wrote in an email.

“That is why we have suspended our strategic partnership with Georgia.”

Georgia gained independence from neighboring Russia in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the two countries have not had diplomatic relations since a brief war in 2008 over the Moscow-backed regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

But the Georgian Dream Party, which has sought closer ties with Russia, has already suspended the country’s EU membership bid.

Rebels have taken control of more than half of Syria's second largest city, Aleppo. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on Friday evening (November 29) that the rebels had taken control of more than half of the city. But recently, the Lebanese Shiite armed group Hezbollah has become active again, taking advantage of the weakening of the Lebanese Shiite armed group Hezbollah and Russia's preoccupation with Ukraine. They entered Aleppo for the first time since 2016. On the other hand, the Syrian government has been forced to withdraw its troops.

On Friday, a channel linked to the rebels said in a statement: "Our forces have started to enter the city of Aleppo."

The BBC confirmed that the video shows armed men running on a street seven kilometers from the center of Aleppo.

However, the country's government says that additional forces have arrived in Aleppo and are pushing back the rebels.

Meanwhile, Aleppo airport has been closed amid tensions and all flights have been canceled, Reuters news agency reported.
