Dhaka: Syrian ousted President Bashar al-Assad has fled Damascus and taken refuge in the Russian capital, Moscow. His family is also with him.

Earlier, Syrian rebel fighters overthrew President Bashar al-Assad after capturing Damascus unopposed, ending a 13-year civil war. The rebels' capture of Damascus ended the Assad family's half-century rule.

On Sunday (December 8) Reuters news agency reported. Russian news agencies RIA Novosti and Tass reported this news, citing several Kremlin sources.

The news also said that Assad and his family members had sought refuge in Russia.

It said that ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his family members had arrived in Moscow. Russia had granted them political asylum on humanitarian grounds.

The Russian Foreign Ministry had previously said that ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had left the country along with power.
