Dhaka: Dope test certificate will be required from Sunday to get or renew professional driving license. Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Nur Mohammad Majumder on Wednesday sent a circular to all divisional and circle offices to implement the decision.

The circular sent by the BRTA chairman said that only those who are not addicted to drugs will be considered eligible for a professional driving license. However, dope testing is not mandatory for amateur licenses. You must have a professional license to operate as a driver for commercial transport, hired vehicles or government vehicles.

According to the circular, drug testing can be done in all district level government hospitals, 6 hospitals in Dhaka city and all laboratories approved by the government's drug control department. The six hospitals in Dhaka are Dhaka Medical College Hospital, National Institute of Mental Health and Hospital, National Institute of Laboratory Medicine and Referral Center, National Orthopedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Institute (NITOR), National Chest Disease Institute and Hospital and Kurmitola General Hospital.

In her speech on the occasion of National Road Safety Day on last October 22, 2020, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina directed the authorities to bring the drivers under drug test. About a year and a half after giving those instructions, BRTA has started implementation.
