Dhaka: The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens' Committee will distribute leaflets, hold rallies and hold public relations across the country from January 6 to January 11 to find out people's expectations regarding the publication of the July Proclamation or July Declaration.

Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, announced the program at a press conference held at the central office of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at Bangla Motor in the capital on Saturday (January 4).

Hasnat said, "We have demanded that the interim government announce the July Proclamation by January 15. Just as every person in the country participated in this uprising, we think that this declaration will reflect the aspirations of the people."

He said, "We want to reach out to the people. We will conduct public relations in all educational institutions and among all professionals in the country. The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens' Committee will jointly do this work."

National Citizens Committee convener Nasiruddin Patwari said, "The government's activities regarding the July Revolution declaration are not yet visible. If no action is taken quickly in this regard, strict programs will be announced. We will appeal to the government to start working on this important issue soon. We want; we are ready to provide all kinds of cooperation to the government."

The state has filed a leave to appeal against the verdict to quash four cases of extortion filed against BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

The state's application has been included in the agenda of the Appellate Division for hearing on Sunday (January 5).

A four-judge bench of the Appellate Division headed by Senior Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam will hear these applications.

In the application, the state said that the verdict given by the High Court to quash the cases was not correct.

On October 23, a double High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain dismissed the four cases filed against Tarique Rahman.

Incidentally, in 2007, various individuals filed these cases against Tarique Rahman at Gulshan, Kafrul, Shahbagh and Dhanmondi police stations on charges of extortion. An application was filed in the High Court under Section 561(a) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, questioning the validity of filing the case.

Across the country, 539 people died in 504 road accidents last December. 764 people were injured in these accidents. Among the dead, 79 were women and 77 were children. An average of 17.38 people was killed every day in December. This means that the death toll in December increased by 12.85 percent.

The organization presented this report in a press release signed by the organization's executive director Saidur Rahman on Saturday (January 4). The members of the Road Accident Monitoring Cell of the Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association prepared this report by monitoring the news of road, rail and waterway accidents published in widely circulated and credible national, regional and online newspapers.

The highest number of road accidents occurred in Dhaka division this month, with 177 people killed in 158 road accidents. The lowest number of road accidents occurred in Sylhet division, with 26 people killed in 30 road accidents. The lowest number of road accidents occurred in Barguna, Lalmonirhat and Panchagarh districts. Although a few accidents occurred in these 3 districts, there were no fatalities.

In addition, 14 people were killed and 5 were injured in 19 accidents on the railway. 3 people were killed and 4 were injured in 3 accidents on the waterway. During this period, 206 people were killed in 211 motorcycle accidents. This is 41.86 percent of the total accidents and 38.21 percent of the fatalities.

A total of 54 people were killed in the road accidents, including 31 people in 7 auto-rickshaws, 12 in 3 private cars, 5 in 1 microbus and 6 in 2 motorcycles.

Based on information published in the media, it is known that 63 students from various schools, madrasas and colleges, including 3 policemen, 12 teachers from various schools-colleges and madrasas, 3 journalists, 2 engineers, 2 lawyers, 1 deputy secretary, 1 agricultural officer, 1 livestock officer, 1 deputy director of the Bangladesh Institute of Agricultural Sciences, 9 officers and employees of various banks and insurance companies, 13 officers and employees of various NGOs, 24 sales representatives of medicines and various products, 32 local businessmen, 2 UP members and 11 local political leaders, 4 imams-muazzins, 5 garment workers, 9 construction workers, 4 painters, 3 brick kiln workers, 2 disabled people and 1 student from BUET, were killed in the road accidents.

During this period, 206 motorcycle drivers and riders, 21 bus passengers, 30 truck-covered van-tractor-trolley-lorry passengers, 32 private car-microbus passengers, 112 three-wheeler passengers (easy bike-CNG-autorickshaw-autovan-tempu), 15 passengers of locally made vehicles (Nasimon-Alamsadhu-Tomtom-Latahamba) and 9 bicycle-rickshaw riders were killed in road accidents.

An analysis of the type of accident shows that 38.29 percent of the total accidents that occurred this month occurred on national highways, 42.46 percent on regional roads, 10.91 percent on rural roads and 7.53 percent on city roads and 0.79 percent in other places.

DMP's Tejgaon Police Station has arrested a Chhatra League leader, who was the accused in the case filed in connection with the attack on Begum Khaleda Zia's motorcade while she was participating in an election campaign at Karwan Bazar in the capital. The arrested person has been named as Md. Abul Hasan (40).

He was arrested in a drive in the capital's Monipuri Para area at around 4:15 am on Friday (January 3).

DMP's Media Division Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed this information at around 10:15 pm on the same day.

He said that on April 20, 2015, the election campaign for the post of mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation was going on in Karwan Bazar. Begum Khaleda Zia participated in that election campaign on behalf of BNP's nominated candidate Tabith Awal. Abul Hossain, the accused in the case filed at Tejgaon Police Station on August 22 in connection with the attack on the campaign convoy, has been arrested.

Police sources also learned that the arrested Hasan is the senior vice-president of Tejgaon Police Station Chhatra League. A regular case has been registered against him at Tejgaon Police Station.
