Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has urged Malaysia to issue multiple-entry visas for Bangladeshi workers so that they can easily return home as needed.

He raised the issue when Malaysian High Commissioner Mohammad Suhada Osman met the chief adviser at the state guesthouse Jamuna on Monday (January 13).

The chief adviser also called for ensuring the entry of 18,000 Bangladeshi workers who could not join work within the stipulated time frame in May.

The High Commissioner said a joint technical committee comprising officials from Malaysia and Bangladesh met in Kuala Lumpur on December 31 on the issue and another meeting is planned on Tuesday on the same issue.

Recalling his meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Dhaka last October, the chief adviser expressed hope that Malaysia would expedite the process so that the next batch of Bangladeshi workers can plan to go to Malaysia for work.

The chief adviser congratulated Malaysia on assuming the ASEAN Chairmanship from January 1 this year and called for support for Bangladesh to become an ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner and later a full member.

He added that ASEAN’s support would be needed for the upcoming UN-sponsored international conference on the Rohingya crisis in 2025, based on UN General Assembly Resolution 79/182.

He urged the new Malaysian High Commissioner, who was appointed in December 2024, to work on more Malaysian investment and relocation of factories in Bangladesh, so as to harness the youth potential of Bangladesh.

The Principal Advisor said, “I hope that during your stay in Bangladesh, the relations between Bangladesh and Malaysia in terms of economy and business will become closer.”

The Principal Advisor said that Bangladesh is waiting for a convenient date from Malaysia to hold the fourth Bilateral Consultations Mechanism (BCM) in Kuala Lumpur.

He also said that Bangladesh is ready to host the fifth Joint Commission Meeting at the Foreign Minister level in Dhaka in mid-2025.

Senior Secretary for SDG Affairs Lamia Morshed was present at the event.
